You can't plan the best stuff. The laugh you didn't expect. Your dad trying not to cry. Your flower girl completely abandoning the plan. Your friends losing their minds on the dance floor. The look between the two of you when nobody else is paying attention. That's the stuff I'm watching for.
The moments are already there.
I've spent nearly 20 years learning how to anticipate what's about to happen, where to stand, who to watch and when something small is about to become something important. Sometimes it's emotional. Sometimes it's beautiful. Sometimes it's completely ridiculous.
I want you to see the photographs later and remember what your wedding actually felt like—not just what it looked like.
Documentary doesn't mean I never give direction.
When something real is happening, I'm not going to stop it and ask you to do it again.
But I'm also not going to watch you stand in terrible light wondering what to do with your hands.
I'll help with your timeline. I'll organize the family photographs. I'll give you direction when you need it. And when it's time to make a really great portrait, we'll make one.
Documentary photography is about knowing when not to interfere.
Beautiful isn't always perfect.
Sometimes it's messy. Sometimes it's loud. Sometimes somebody's crying. Sometimes somebody's pants rip on the dance floor. And sometimes those end up being the photographs you love the most.
